Riptide Analysis/ question:

Vance Joy is an indie artist, an indie artist is someone who is "independent" in their music,  this means that they have no major record and are singed to a small record label. Indie has a do it yourself approach with low budget, not like major record labels Indie artist are more underground and art known much is a little following. In indie their is different genres foe example alternative rock witch is mainly white straight Maes witch is guitar based. The genres for riptide is Indie folk indie pop. James Keogh, known as Vance Joy wrote and produced this song. `the song is from the album
god loves when you're dancing and dream your life away. the indie pop genre is generally targeted at audience members at the age of 16-22. The reason it is becoming popular is due to the record labels releasing snippets of information about up coming artists and new songs to entice the audience to watch or listen to their music. These are popular indie artists,Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Bloc Party, Muse. The video is influenced by the film Blue Velvet, this is linking to the glamorous singer who slowly gets abused through the video, this links in with the film as it has a glamorous singer who is abused. The other influence for this video is Wes Anderson, They have used a lot of his colouring. A lot of the camera movements is either a pan or a steady shot, it also used close up, wide shots and upper body shots. the video makes a lot of references to horror and surrealism however the movies that they use are old timed films, showing that this video was made for older generation and alternative kids as the films were older and modern day audience wouldn't understand the references. the people who did understand the references would think that it is interesting and brave as the video is modern but is showing older film clips. the way gender is represented in the video is creepy as women are seen as objectified and and being stalked by the males women's body are framed in scenes however their face is not showing that women are objects to the men. there are also women running away and being looked at but not knowing that, showing the men as creepy and objectifying women. the video is trying to shine a light on the parts the media does not care about and is not shown in the news, these alarming things are shown and shows that they are trying to create awareness for women throughout the music video. there is a lot of film references to that shows women as being domesticated as every seen that she is on she only gets worse and worse linking to the film where she is being domesticated throughout. this also shows that men are destroying women dreams because the men dont like what the women are doing. throughout the music video we do not see the artist perform once throughout the video. there is a fragment montage based on interpreting the lyrics of the song however there is a some what clear narrative throughout the video. even though it jumps between scenes there is a narrative of the woman who is being domesticated by someone this is the only story throughout the film, the other scenes are just linking to what is being said throughout the video with no narrative but the scenes are confusing. the confusing does change the meaning of the words like the scenes with the women become more disturbing with the words as the scenes are disturbing, it also shows people as greedy and only following the things that they desire witch is women and money as the women get taken stalked and objectified to the lyrics making it creepy and disturbing also creating a new meaning for the lyrics.
