Dizzee Rascal
Dylan Kwabena Mill, or known as Dizzee Rascal, was born in September 18th 1984. Dylan is known for being a British rapper and record producer. His music involves, Grime, R&B, British hip hop and UK Garage. He released his first album called "Boy In Da Corner" in 2003, this would earn him the 2003 Mercury Prize. Dylan was born in Bow London and his father had died when he was young, his mother was a single rising parent. When Dylan was young he "violent and disruptive" , his mother had to move him a lot of schools because of the fighting and being removed. He got the name rascal as that would be what bis teachers called him when he behaved badly. Rascal's youth consisted of, fighting teachers, grand thief auto and robbing pizza men. In one of his schools, he was removed from every class except music, he created music on the schools computers and was encouraged by his music teacher and in the summer went to a music workshop. In the same week the album was released, whilst performing with Roll Deep Crew in Cyprus Dylan was stabbed six times, the alleged reason is there was a feud with Dylan and Garage. In September of 2003 Dylan was awarded the Mercury Prize for the best album of 2003, he was the youngest person to receive this award only being 19. His album was voted at the top50 albums of the year by rolling stones and the number 1 album by planet sound.
Dream, Dizzee Rascal
When the video starts the first thing we see is this colourful opening of dizzee's name, this is unusual as dizzee is a grime and pop artist, grime would never have anything like this as it shows dizzee to be childish and soft, even though he isn't. The alphabet blocks also represent how dizzee failed school and has school and has little to no knowledge, showing that he has a mind of a child.
The first human we see is a middle aged upper class woman. She is from the 1960 show Muffin Mule, the video represents the same imagery as the show, they have edited her black and white so that she as the ascetic. She represents both power and the media. She has the power as she controls dizzee, she's the one who tells him to get in and out the box, showing that she has control over him and sees him as a puppet. She also represents power as she is much bigger than dizzee. When she sees the crimes on the piano she looks shy disgusted showing that she is not used to it as she is classical Brittany. dizzee isn't allowed off her piano throughout the song showing that she has her boundaries. This links back to 1960 as black people were not allowed in suburban areas and were only allowed in urban areas. She represents the media as she wants to keep him in the box and wants to keep everyone as puppets, she tries to show dizzee and his friends in a bad light as she looks into the camera when crimes are taking place to see if you are looking at him doing this, but doesn't do this when dizzee is making his dream come true. She also represents the media as she is much bigger than dizzee showing that she looks over everything he does and is like the industry controlling people.
This frame shows racial stereotyping, as is shows dizzee as a animal so he has to be caged, the only way he can be released form his cage is by a white woman who has a lot of power, the only reason he would be uncaged is for entirtanment as he is just a clown to them who needs to make everyone happy under the supervision of the media and its back into his cramped cage into he is needed again to be used. there is also more racial stereotyping as we have black people who are represented as golliwogs, we know this as there is their is the big red smile with the wide eyes, this is racal stereotyping as it was racist, however was never seen as racist until recent years, this also shows how the elderly and the media won't let go of times and will always seem them branded as golliwogs, the red haired man is also racial stereotyping as it is saying that Scottish people are just always drunk alcoholics who wear their kilts all the time, all 3 racial stereotyping is hight offensive to both black and Scottish culture as the stereotype isn't good and shows them in a negative light. This once again shows the media is toying with people as everyone but Dizzee is a toy showing that unless you get famous the media will always want to toy with you as they are the puppet master and you're the puppet
the setting in the scene are different to grime and hip hop, the main setting witch is the old lady house hints to more classical music. this is strange as it is meant to be a grime hip hop video, classic grime would have the area you was from and random corner shops as the main setting, whilst pop videos would have seductive women and expensive items, including clubs as their main locations. The director did this to play on peoples mind and show that dizzee is different and not like very other artist in the industry. The sub scenes we have are more grime and hip hop, the first sub scene we have isa rough area with shops that are being stolen from this scene links to grime as it has the classic rough area with local shops, the shops have graffiti on it to furthermore indicate that it is a hard part in dizzees life as he has to be around areas that are high in Crome. the second sub scene we see is the studio, this is a classic hip hop shot, as it shows how he has made it and now can afford studio time, this is a classic hip hop shot that is used everywhere, the final sub scene is a nigh club, this is a mother classic hip hop shot as it shows them as popular as shows that again they had made it, both of the hip hop shots shows dizzee performing, this implies that his dream really did come true and he is now successful and doesn't need to be run by the media, this is why he is the only small person who isn't a toy who's being controlled by a puppet master
